Local teams dominate Cal Wearley girls

Fort Benton, Havre and Chinook top big meet at the HMS Track

Normally, spring weather in Montana can be a little dicey, but Wednesday for the Cal Wearley Invitational track meet, the weather couldn't have been better, and it led to some impressive performances from local athletes.

When it comes to track on the Hi-Line there are some impressive girls teams, but of all the teams in attendance at the Cal Wearley, which was hosted at the Havre Middle School track, no team was more impressive than the Fort Benton girls.

Fort Benton won the Northern C Divisional crown in girls track last year and the Longhorns picked up right where they left off, capturing the top spot at the Cal Wearley with 125.50 points. Havre finished second with 95 and Chinook got third with 59.

The Longhorns had a number of athletes who stood out led by Kaitlyn Bird, who won the 800-meter run (2:35), the 1,600 (5:47) and the 300-meter hurdles (49.8). She was also part of Fort Benton's 1,600 relay team that also finished first. Leah Gannon, McKenzie Clark and Alia Evans were also part of that team that ran a 4:23.6. The other top performer on the day for Fort Benton was Koya Nack, who won both the shot put (34-06) and javelin (111-04) events, while finishing second in the discus.

Maddy Thompson won the triple jump (16-07). She also finished third in the 100 and the pole vault. Gannon also had a stellar day, finishing second in the 400, third in the 200 and second in the long jump. Clark also finished second in the 800 and sixth in the 400. Nicole Axtman also finished third in the triple jump for Fort Benton, which won the meet going away.

However, even though Fort Benton won the meet, it was still a more-than-solid day for the Chinook Sugarbeeters, who took third with just eight competitors. Yet, one of those, Megan Molyneaux certainly helped her team's cause by winning both the 100 (12.28) and the 200 (26.9). She also helped Chinook win the 400-meter relay with a time of 52.7. She was joined in the relay by Kourtney Hanson, Rochelle Chaffin and Jaye Anderson.

"You just never know what you are going to show day to day," Chinook head coach Paula Moylneaux said. "But our girls did really well last week in Glasgow and we were short a lot of kids last week, but our girls, they are doing some things that we didn't necessarily anticipate, so it's really exciting and not just one of them, but all of them are contributing points."

In addition to Molyneaux's outstanding day, Hanson also finished third in the 1,600, while Chaffin was third in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the triple jump. Brooke Elliot also contributed to the effort for the Beeters by finishing fourth in the discus and sixth in the javelin. Lincey Johnson and Rachel Gunderson also added a sixth-place showings for the Beeters in the triple jump and discus respectively. Gunderson was also third in the javelin.

"We only have eight girls right now," coach Molyneaux said. "But I think that every single one of them contributed points to us today in one way or another."

Havre, which finished second in the meet, also had a number of athletes find the podium, led by Jessa Chvilicek, who won the high jump (5-00) and Caitlyn Terry, who finished first in the triple jump (32-00) and fifth in the long jump. Senior Kristen Nash also won the discus for the Blue Pony girls, thanks to a throw of 112-07.

Other Havre girls who placed included Ireland Coyne, who was second in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles; Logan Huebsch, who was third in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles; Katie Wirtzberger, who was fourth in the 200 and second in the triple jump; Sarah Faber, who was second in the high jump; Loni Waid, who was sixth in the pole vault; and Tayler Marinkovich, who finished sixth in the 100.

Katelin Harvey was the only North Star girl to rack up any points, as she was fourth in the 800 and third in the 1,600, while Big Sandy going points from Jessica Roth, who was fifth in the 3,200 and Jeanna Leader, who finished fifth in the triple jump.
