It has been quite the year for Havre High senior Parker Filius, especially when he became a four-time state champion.
Now, he can add national champion to his resume.
Filius took part in one of the most prestigious amateur wrestling tournaments in the country last weekend in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and he came out on top.
Wrestling at 138 pounds, Filius captured the national title in the USAW Junior Folkstyle National Championships. In the championship match, he earned a 5-3 decision over Jake Bergelund, a senior who is headed to the University of Minnesota. It’s likely he and Filius could see each other down the road as Filius is also headed to the Big 10, to wrestle for Purdue University.
On his way to the national championship match, Filius got a pin and a technical fall to advance to the semifinals.
There he beat Gary Joint of Leemore, California 8-3 in sudden victory overtime, setting up his championship match showdown with Bergelund.
