Allix Goldhahn's emotional journey is bringing her to the Armory Gymnasium
There are a lot of dynamic, multi-sport athletes along the Hi-Line, but one that has accomplished big things recently is Fairfield’s Allix Goldhahn.
Goldhahn, who started her high school athletic career in Chester, has been racking up awards and honors for the past four years. The soon-to-be Montana State University-Northern women’s basketball player has done some great things on the hardwood, including helping the Fairfield Eagles beat Malta for the Class B state championship earlier this month.
While the Eagles' 34-33 win over the M-Ettes in the state championship game back on March 11 is probably the highlight of the senior’s athletic career, it’s far from her only achievement.
The 5-8 wing player, who excels on both ends of the floor, signed with the Skylights back in November after a junior season that saw Goldhahn average 8.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists. When MSU-N signed her, she was already a two-time All-State selection, earning Class C All-State honors as a sophomore playing for Chester-Joplin-Inverness.. Then, she earned her way onto the Class B All-State team as a junior in her first season playing for Fairfield
During her junior year with the Eagles, Fairfield made it all the way to the state championship game, before finishing as runner up to Malta, which won the state title game 49-47.
This season, the Eagles overcame a rough start to the season, that included a January loss in Havre to the Blue Ponies, to find their form in March. And by the time the Class B state tournament rolled around, Fairfield was playing as well as any team in tournament, including two-time defending state champion Malta.
After knocking off Florence and Wolf Point at the Class B in the first two rounds at state, the Eagles and M-Ettes would meet Saturday night for the second year in a row. Like it normally is when Malta and Fairfield get together, the title game was a fight to the finish. But thanks in large part to Goldhahn, who scored 17 of her team’s 34 points and also contributed with her stellar defense, Fairfield found a way to win by one.
The win obviously meant a lot to each player, but it had special meaning for Goldhahn, who sported a pink bracelet to honor her late sister Lauryn Goldhahn, who died tragically in a car wreck last August.
“It’s for her,” Goldhahn said. “For everything that we have gone through together. She is in my shoes, I have socks with her initials on them. She is an inspiration to me. She is my motivation. I want to go out and play for her. It’s how I keep her with me.”
The state championship was the perfect ending to an impressive high-school hoops career for Goldhahn that included being named all-conference four times and all-state three times. The three-sport athlete, who is also a two-time All-State performer in volleyball and a former standout in track, also played recently for the second time in the Hi-Line Invitational basketball tournament.
Goldhahn played with the Class B team, which ran through the tournament undefeated, knocking off the Class C team twice in order to win the championship for the fourth straight year. Goldhahn was also on the team that won in 2016. Yet the Fairfield standout also put together her own impressive performance individually, as she was named the defensive player of the tournament.
Goldhahn, who said she will be participating in track this spring, talked to the Havre Daily News for five questions following the HIT championship game.
HDN: What’s it like to play in the HIT?
Goldhahn: “It’s so fun. Just to get with a group of girls from all over the state. You meet new girls and you just play. It makes it really fun. I love it.”
HDN: What is it like to play with girls like Sophia Stiles of Malta, a rival of yours?
Goldhahn: “It’s so fun. We are competitors when we play against each other, but when we play together, we enjoy it.”
HDN: What was it like to win the state championship?
Goldhahn: “Oh my gosh, it was awesome. It was an amazing experience.”
HDN: How excited are you to play for the Skylights?
Goldhahn; “I am very excited. I love it up here. I love the girls. I know them all pretty well and the community is just amazing.”
HDN: What’s it like to know that you will be playing at the Armory in the not too distant future?
Goldhahn: “When I came here last year I never knew I would be possibly playing here and now this is my new home in a few months.”
