Gen was born near Fairview, Montana, to Herbert and Opal Hinz on Jan. 29, 1934. She graduated from Fairview High School in 1952. After high school, Gen taught dance.
After returning to Fairview, Gen worked as a high school secretary, where she met the love of her life and husband of 58 years, Robert Kaftan, who was a teacher at a nearby school. They were married in 1958, and lived in Sidney, Montana, and Missoula, Montana, during the early years while Bob worked and continued his education.
Eventually, the couple settled in Havre, in 1966, where they raised their five boys. While her children were young, Gen was a stay-at-home mother. She was active in Women's Aglow and participated in Bible Studies and Women's Ministries at Havre Assembly of God.
In the early '80s, the couple bought Maranatha Christain Book Store, which Gen operated until they sold it in 1990 in order to retire.
Gen had many friends who were very dear to her. She loved coffee and chocolate, and music. She lived for her family and would do anything for them, cherishing the time spent with her children and grandchildren.
Above all, Gen loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and served Him with her whole heart. Her love of God spilled over into all that she did and onto all those who were part of her life. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Gen was preceded in death by her parents and son, Gary.
She is survived by husband, Robert Kaftan; sons, Rick (Barbara) of Belgrade, Mike (Sandy) of Billings, Alan (Kim) of Havre and Jon (Gina) of Havre; brother, Jerry Hinz of Worden, Montana; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
