News you can use
Open my eyes, Lord
You know, Lord, several of us were chatting the other day about being in Your presence when one gal shared that one year as a teacher of an English class her daughter was one of her students. She said that was very special, she felt so blessed to have her daughter there. Our group was silent for a moment; then one chap quietly shared that sitting on the couch with his wife at the end of the day — to him, that was sacred. He said that as they sat there, close together, they “fit” nicely together, side by side, and listened to each other, and that made it very special.
The facial expressions of the others in the group changed. Which one of us ever thought about a quiet evening sharing with one’s spouse quite that way? This certainly was “food for thought.”
So, there we were, sitting together listening to one another. Several more wanted to share their experiences. They spoke of clients at work, simple gestures of kindness, someone who stopped to listen and so much more. One shared about how she was going through a bit of a rough day when a casual friend reached out and gave her a hug. There might have been a few tears, she said, but that special moment of caring just brightened her day in a very special way.
Lord, we may never know just when Your presence will be revealed to us. Indeed, the very places where we are — ordinary as the place may seem – might turn out to be “holy ground,” if we’d only pay attention. Like Your Word says in Exodus, 3:5, “Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” Thank You, Lord, for everyday opportunities to be in Your presence, standing on holy ground!
Love, Mara
