Havre falls to Bozeman in state championship game inside the Havre Ice Dome
When it comes to March sports in Montana, there is a lot more happening than just basketball and this past weekend, the Havre Ice Hawks and three other teams were proof of that as they took part in the State B Montana High School hockey tournament.
The tournament, which was held inside the Havre Ice Dome from Friday to Sunday, saw the Ice Hawks wind up in second place after losing the championship game to Bozeman 5-1 Sunday.
Before that, the Ice Hawks played three games in round-robin format and achieved a 1-1-1 record to advance to the championship game.
In the opening game of the tournament, Havre took on the Glasgow Ice Dawgs. The two teams went back and forth throughout the game and ultimately, played to a 4-4 tie. Bryce Denton, Donovan McLain, Jeffrey Ralph and Ethan Roberts all scored goals for Havre, while Kyle Kirkpatrick (2), Bay Merker, Roberts and Denton all dished out assists. Kinzee Peterson finished the game with 35 saves.
In the second game of the tournament, Havre took on Bozeman, the top-seeded team in the state B bracket and after a close game, the Ice Hawks fell 4-3. Clifford Lenhardt had a big game with two goals and one assist; August Eacker also found net for the Ice Hawks, while Kirkpatrick (2) and Ralph each added assists. Peterson faced 40 shots and registered 36 saves.
After getting a loss and a tie in round-robin action, the Ice Hawks needed a win to get to the state championship game and thanks to an 8-2 win over Miles City, Havre got it.
Ethan Roberts notched a hat trick for the Ice Hawks, who also got two goals from August Eacker. Cole Hanson and Bay Merker were the others to find the net for Havre. Peterson got the win in net after stopping 27 of the 29 shots she faced.
That set the stage for a showdown with Bozeman for the state championship at the the B level, which Bozeman won by a final of 5-1. Roberts scored the only goal for the Ice Hawks, who finished second in the tournament. It was assisted by Kirkpatrick. Peterson saw 48 shots and turned away 43 of them.
