Yvonne Tiger speaks during her presentation of "IndiVisible: African-Native American Lives," a presentation of the Chancellor's Lecture Series of Montana State University-Northern Tuesday in the university's Vande Bogart Library. One of Tiger's topics was the history of slaves of the Cherokee Nation, who were declared free after the U.S. Civil War and called part of the Cherokee Nation in its 1866 treaty with the U.S. government. The tribe over the last century has disputed that the Freedmen, as the former slaves came to be known, are part of the Cherokee Nation and the issue is sitting in court.
