Rocky Boy girls moving on

The Rocky Boy Morning Stars are headed back to the Northern B Divisional Tournament. After falling in the semifinals of the District 1B last Friday, Rocky Boy won back-to-back games to place an outstanding third in the toughest district in Class B basketball.

Rocky Boy got to the semifinals by trouncing Conrad 63-35 Thursday night in Cut Bank. Rocky Boy jumped out with an 11-2 lead and never looked back as Jaylynn Mitchell scored 16 points and Adrienne Gopher added 14 in the win.

The victory meant Rocky Boy would have to face top-seeded Fairfield in the semifinals Friday, and the Eagles were just too much for the Morning Stars in the second half. The game was tied at 20-20 after the first quarter, and Fairfield led by just four points at halftime. But the Eagles outscored the Morning Stars 40-19 the rest of the way, including a 17-4 run in the final eight minutes, Sean Henry led Rocky Boy with 18 points, while Natalie Klinker and MSU-Northern commit Allix Goldhahn combined for 45 points for Fairfield.

Then came Rocky Boy’s biggest game of the season, a loser-out battle with host Cut Bank Saturday morning. But, the game was never close as Rocky Boy rolled to an 89-65 win. The Morning Stars exploded for 28 first-quarter points and overwhelmed the Wolves from start to finish. Adrienne Gopher scored 24 points for Rocky Boy, while Jaylynn Mitchell added 20 and Rosie Parker scored 10.

But Rocky Boy wasn’t done either. In Saturday’s consolation game, the Morning Stars knocked off Shelby for good measure, 63-53. Mitchell and Parker scored 17 each, while Gopher added 12 as Rocky Boy made it back to the Northern B. Fairfield beat Choteau in the championship game.

Meanwhile, Harlem’s season ended at the District 2B tourney this weekend in Malta. The Wildcats lost to Glasgow 51-40 in the play-in game Thursday night. Malta beat Poplar in the championship game Saturday, while Glasgow beat Wolf Point for third. Those four teams, along with the top four from the 1B, will meet at the Northern B Divisional, which runs Thursday-Saturday in Glasgow. The top two teams from the Northern B will advance to the Class B state tourney, March 9-11 in Billings.
