While there were a number of statewide sports events this past weekend, one took place right here in Havre with the Montana Amateur Hockey Association holding its girls 14U state championship in Havre inside the Ice Dome.
There were seven teams that took part in the competition and when it was all said and done, the Flathead Lady Fusion earned the title of state champions. They knocked off the Idaho Polar Bears in the championship game. The Missoula Lady Bruins finished third in the tournament, after defeating Glasgow in the consolation game.
As far as Havre was concerned, the Ice Hawks opened the tournament against Glasgow Friday night and got the opening goal as Rhoda Peterson found the net. However, Glasgow scored the next six goals in the game and came away with the 6-1 victory. Saturday, Havre took on the Missoula Lady Bruins and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period thanks to Tanya Ralph and Jocelyn Staples, who each scored twice in the opening stanza. Olivia Albrecht added another goal later for the Ice Hawks, but Missoula ultimately rallied and tied the game 5-5.
The tie was enough for Missoula to advance to the semifinals, while Havre was eliminated at the point, but did finish fifth thanks to the tie with the Lady Bruins. Missoula lost to Idaho in the semifinals, while Glasgow fell to Flathead.
