Pony Pool Party

Talk about making the last day count.

On Saturday, the Havre High swim teams competed in the Havre Community Pool for the final time this season, and also wrapped up the 2016-17 regular season in the process. And the Blue Ponies went out in style, sweeping the team titles in a meet which included Hardin, Columbia Falls and Whitefish.

The HHS girls won seven different events and scored 199 team points, while the Pony boys were even stronger in the team score, racking up 203.5 points on their way to victory.

"Winning a swim meet is like building a house," HHS head coach Bill Kilgore said. "You stack brick after brick until you are done. It's always nice if someone can come in and put up 10 bricks at a time, but that doesn't happen that often. Today was a complete team victory for the Blue Ponies because each team member stepped up and placed a brick on the wall to victory. We have talked about putting the perfect meet together all season, and today they did it. We did not have a single disqualification or bad swim, and the final results showed that. I am so proud of all of them."

Kilgore had good reason to be proud.

The Pony girls, in swim-after-swim, seemed to dominate the competition. Amelia Miller got things started with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 2:19.10. Miller would add to her total with a victory in the 100 backstroke, finishing that race in 1:17.07. Hannah Lunak had a big day as well, winning the 50 free in 31.01, while swimming to a second in the 400 free in 5:40.62.

Adding to Havre's individual titles was Ally Padgett, who won the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:26.70, while Jessica Otto finished second at 1:33.72 and Lacey Huseby was third at 1:37.62. Huseby also got a sixth place in the 100 free, while Padgett finished second in the backstroke at 1:24.94. Laura Vance was Havre's next champion with a great swim in the 100 breaststroke. She won the race with a time of 1:36.63.

Vance would also finish sixth in the 200 IM, while Angela Rhines got third in the 100 breatstroke and fifth in the 400 free. Hannah Pratt added a fifth in the breaststroke, and Michelle Rainey was sixth. Kadyn Acor finished sixth in the backstroke.

The Havre relay teams came up big as well. The Pony A squad won both the 200 (2:12.44) and the 400 (4:37.49) free relays, and finished second in the 200 medley. Havre's B team finished fourth in the 200 medley, fifth in the 200 free and sixth in the 400 free.

"We had some very unselfish swims by different swimmers because it would help the overall team standings," Kilgore said. "Laura Vance took on the 200 IM, one of the toughest events, so that she could score some points for the team, and then turned around and took first place in the 100 breaststroke. Truly an outstanding performance. Angela Rhines swam the 400 meter freestyle, an event she didn't think she was ready for, and just killed it to score points for her team. I continue to be amazed at how selfless this team is and just how much they are willing to sacrifice for their team. It is truly an honor to coach such quality individuals."

Not to be outdone, the Pony boys delivered on a big senior day.

Jacob Miller won the 400 free with a time of 5:03.77, and finished fourth in the 100 backstroke. Shane Friede also captured a title in the 50 free at 27.34 and finished fourth in the 100 free, while Ethan Lines was second (3:01.33), Trevor Williams was fourth and Clayton Twombly was sixth in the 200 IM. Lines placed fourth in the 100 free, while Mason Sandstrom was third at 1:05.58, and Ammon Lines was sixth.

Sandstrom also swam to a third-place finish in the 50 free at 28.88, while John Klein was sixth. Klein added a fifth in the 200 free, while Noah Gjesdal finished sixth. Aylan Pratt finished third in the 100 breaststroke at 1:26.17, while Shandon Oberquell placed fourth and Amon Lines was sixth. Oberquell added a fifth in the 100 backstroke and Paxtin McCann finished sixth. The Pony boys also won the 400 free relay with a time of 4:37.49, while the B team was sixth. Havre also finished third and fourth in the 200 free and third and fourth in the 200 medley.

"Jacob Miller went all in and swam the 400 meter freestyle, a long-distance event he is not used to swimming. Jacob swam a strong race and ended up taking first place, scoring 10 critical points for the team. Trevor Williams showed his tenacity and team spirit by swimming the 200 indivdual medley and scoring four points for his team," Kilgore said. "Like I said, a swim meet victory is built brick by brick, and our entire team stepped up and placed every brick. I am so proud to be a part of this team and look forward our state meet."
