CMR thumps Havre High boys

The Havre High boys basketball team was looking for a win Tuesday night against CMR, with the hopes of forgetting its buzzer-beating loss to Livingston last Saturday.

Yet, after a forgettable offensive performance in which the Blue Ponies managed to tally just 26 points, HHS suffered another loss, this time on the road against the Class AA Rustlers, 46-26.

Havre is now 3-10 on the season. The loss also ended a four-game losing streak for the Rustlers against the Ponies.

While the Rustlers, who came into the game at 4-6, have had their own struggles, they are still a solid Class AA team and their strength on defense showed early. After just one field goal and three points in the first quarter left Havre down 10-3 after one, a four-point second quarter, put HHS behind the Rustlers 23-7 at the half.

Things didn't get much better for the Ponies in the third quarter, as they scored only five points, compared to 12 by the Rustlers. At that point, CMR led 35-12.

The Ponies finally managed to get some offense going in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points in the last eight minutes, two more than the first 24 minutes combined. Yet, CMR managed 11 of its own in the final stanza, as the Rustlers won the game going away.

Garrison Rothwell was the only player on either team to reach double figures, as he ended the game with 11 points. Sam Vining contributed with nine, while no other CMR player scored more than four. As far as Havre was concerned, Tanner Parsons led HHS with eight points in the loss. Isaac Warp added seven points and Nate Korb added six.

"I know the talent level is not what it's been," CMR head coach John Cislo said to the Great Falls Tribune after the win. "But I still thought that they (Ponies) did a good job of executing."

Havre, which has lost three consecutive games, will look to get back in the win column Saturday at home against Malta, a team the Ponies beat already back in December.
