By this time next month, district tournaments for Hi-Line girls teams will already be over. That’s how fast the 2016-17 basketball season is flying by. And that’s part of what made this last week such a big one.
The action started back on Tuesday as the Turner girls continued their great season with a 56-30 thumping of Dodson. Turner started the game on an 18-4 run and never looked back as Ella Billmayer scored a game-high 13 points.
The Rocky Boy Morning Stars also won a makeup game with Conrad last Tuesday, going on the road to crush the Cowgirls 61-41. Adrienne Gopher poured in 17 points, Rosie Parker added 16 and Sasha Coffee scored 10 in the 1B victory.
In a District 2B game Thursday night, Harlem wasn’t as fortunate. The Wildcats were at home to take on the high-powered Malta M-Ettes, and while Harlem hung in, Malta was too much in a 61-41 win. Malta built a 33-20 lead in the first half, and while the Wildcats played well, it wasn’t enough as Sophia Stiles threw in 26 points for Malta. L’Tia Lawrence scored 10 for the Wildcats.
Friday night was a busy one in the District 9C, and the biggest game took place in Gildford, where the North Star Knights and Turner Tornadoes battled for second place. But on their home floor, the Knights got the best of the Tornadoes in a 49-36 win.
Paij Peterson had a big game for the Knights, scoring 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Sarah Billmayer scored 12 for the Tornadoes.
Fort Benton is also trying to stay near the top of the 9C standings and a 54-13 win over Big Sandy Friday night held. The Fort Benton defense was tenacious, as the Pioneers scored just four points in the first, two in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth.
Leah Gannon scored 15 points to lead Fort Benton, while Aliz Evans had 14. Jaylyn Cline notched eight points for Big Sandy.
Chinook also got back on the winning track Friday night by avenging an early-season loss to Hays-Lodge Pole. In Hays, the Sugarbeeters started the game on a 15-2 run and won 45-34. Sierra Swank scored 15 points for the Beeters, while Rayleigh Kirkaldie had 13 for HLP.
Everybody in the 9C is chasing Box Elder, and Friday night, the Chester-Joplin-Inverness
Hawks couldn’t catch the Bears. In Chester, Box Elder scored 30 first-quarter points in a 67-34 win. Lilly Gopher had a big night for the Bears with 24 points, while Tai and Tia Russell combined for 21. Peyton Hawks paced CJI with nine.
Back in the 2B Friday night, Harlem suffered its second straight loss, as the Wildcats fell to rival Wolf Point, 52-47. Harlem trailed by 12 points at the half and clawed back into the game in the fourth quarter, but still came up short. Skylee Dirden led the Wildcats with 18 points, while Kaila Henry added 13.
Back in the 9C Saturday night, Turner was in another key showdown, but again, the Tornadoes couldn’t get over the hump. Playing at home, Turner fell short, 49-45 against Fort Benton. The game was close throughout, with Turner holding a two-point edge at the half. But, Fort Benton outscored the Tornadoes 16-9 in the fourth.
Coya Knack scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Longhorns, while Alia Evans chipped in with 10. Ella Billmayer scored 11 for the Tornadoes.
CJI found its way back to the winner’s circle Saturday night, by beating HLP 53-43 in Chester. Korrin Harmon lit up the Thunderbirds to the tune of 22 points, while Kayona Fraser and Khloe Kammerzell combined for 18 more for the Hawks.
Chinook also made it a winning weekend, as the Beeters blew by Big Sandy 54-30 Saturday night in Chinook. After a close first quarter, Chinook outscored the Pioneers 38-18 the rest of the way. Sierra Swank scored a game-high 19 for the Beeters, while Brooke Elliot added 12. Jaylyn Cline scored 10 and Jessica Roth added eight for Big Sandy.
