Upward Bound high school students from Harlem, Dodson, Hays and Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation participated Dec. 28 in the monthly academy.
The day started off by meeting with Erica McKeon-Hanson, program director of the Little River Institute, along with Jade Failing, Mia LameBull and Jonathan Nepoose Jr., peer mentors who are members of the Sweetgrass Societ. Alissa Cook, a Writing Pathfinder tutor for the institute, also joined the group.
The group presented an overview on the Little River Institute Program. At the end of the overview, the students asked questions about college life and what motivated the speakers to pursue their degrees.
The afternoon session consisted of lessons on communication skills and writing personal essays. All of the students played a part in these lessons. Most of them were intrigued.
After the students completed the academic lessons they had popcorn and watched a movie.
According to the U.S. Department of Education website, Upward Bound provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree.
