In just its second week of the season, girls high school basketball along the Hi-Line took a back seat to the first big winter blast of the year.
Cancellations around the area over the weekend meant more games weren't played than were this weekend. Still, a few teams managed to get games in.
Friday night, a big upset took place in Chinook as the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds rallied to beat the Chinook Sugarbeeters 46-41 in Chinook. Behind a big game from Rayleigh Kirkaldie, the T-Birds won on Chinook's home floor for the first time in more than a decade.
Another District 9C game that managed to get played Friday was in Big Sandy, where the visiting Fort Benton Longhorns thumped the Pioneers 71-28. Fort Benton jumped out to a 17-4 lead and was never threatened in the contest.
Coya Nack had a huge game for the Longhorns, scoring 27 points to go with 15 rebounds. Alia Evans added 16 for Fort Benton. Jenna Leader paced the Pioneers with eight points.
Fort Benton was perfect on the weekend. Saturday night, the Longhorns were back at home, hosting the Turner Tornadoes, and, thanks to a 19-8 run in the first quarter, the Longhorns won going away, 60-27.
Leah Gannon led all scorers with 23 points, but the Longhorns also got another double-double from Nack, who scored 18 points and pulled down 11 boards. Raegan Conlan led the Tornadoes with eight points.
In another 9C showdown Saturday night, the North Star Knights were no match for the Box Elder Bears. North Star trailed by just six points after the first quarter, but over the next 16 minutes, Box Elder outscored the Knights 42-8 in what was a 71-28 win.
Joelnell Momberg scored 15 points, while Kiya Morsette and Maddie Wolf Chief each scored 10 for Box Elder. Chelsea Donaldson led the Knights with 10 points.
Also Saturday, Chinook rebounded from its loss to HLP with a 44-18 win in Big Sandy. The Beeters outscored the Pioneers 22-7 in the first half and never looked back.
Sierra Swank and Brooke Elliot combined to score 21 points for the Beeters, while Jaylyn Cline had five points for the Pioneers.
There were many 9C cancellations over the weekend, while Rocky Boy and Harlem also had their games postponed. All games will be made up at later dates.
