Northern moves up in NAIA mat poll

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team has this weekend off, but will get right back to work next week. And when the Lights travel to Ashland, Oregon next Thursday, they’ll be ranked No. 5 in the NAIA.

The NAIA released its second Coaches Poll of the 2016-17 season Wednesday, and Northern rose two points, from No. 7 to No. 5. MSU-N is one of five teams from the West Region ranked in the Top 20, and one of three teams ranked in the Top 10. Menlo is No. 4 and Southern Oregon is No. 7. Also ranked is Warner Pacific at No. 14 and UGF at No. 16.

Individually, Northern senior Ben Stroh moved into the No. 1 spot in the NAIA at 184 pounds. Stroh has captured victories in his last two tournaments, including at last weekend’s Battle of the Rockies Open.

Northern has five wrestlers currently holding national rankings. Matt Weber is No. 2 at 141 pounds, Taylor Kornoely is No. 2 at heavyweight, Andrew Bartel is No. 10 at 165 and Drake Randall is No. 16 at 149.

The Lights return to action with a huge rivalry dual at Southern Oregon next Thursday, before closing out their 2016 with a trip to the Reno Tournament of Champions next Sunday.
