Symposium on fighting meth use set for Friday

A symposium will be held Friday at the District 4 HRDC Building to discuss the problem of methamphetamine use.

The forum is sponsored by Parker Canyon Creek Consulting Inc, a firm based in Box Elder.

Mike Geboe, founder of Parker Canyon, said it is the second year that the symposium has been held and is prompted by the high rates of meth use and the social ills that it causes.

He said that the conversation will emphasize the incorporation of traditional practices rooted in tribal traditions as a means to combating meth use and promoting wellness.

Geboe said the roster of speakers will include state Sen. Jonathan Windy Boy, D-Box Elder, Miranda Kirk and Charmayne Healy of Self Transitional and Identity Recovery Project and others talking about what they are doing in their communities to address meth use.

“We are trying to de-emphasize the western practices and trying to implement traditional practices, tribal-based practices and holistic healing,” Geboe said.

He said delegations will be present from Fort Peck, Fort Belknap and the Blackfeet reservations.

Admission is $75. The symposium will begin at 8 a.m. and is scheduled to run until 4:15 p.m. For more information, contact Geboe at 395-4112.
