News you can use
I went to the optometrist the other day for my annual eye exam. During the examination process I was subjected to several different kinds of procedures to test my ability to focus and my ability to stay focused. The whole idea is to determine if I need any type of corrective lens in order to give me better vision. As I began to think about focus with the natural eye, my thoughts shifted to focus with the spiritual eye.
In Psalms 62:5-6 David says “My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved.” In verse 5 we see that David is reminding himself to wait silently for God alone. God is the solution in all situations. The world wants you to focus on the situation, i.e., the problem, and thereby continue to be in the struggle. If you get distracted, refocus. Keep thanking God for the answer.
Next David says that his expectation is from God. When Vicki and I are expecting the children and grandchildren to come for a holiday or special event, we think about them more frequently. We get up that day and our thoughts immediately focus on their journey. “I suppose they are on the road by now. I bet they are stopping for lunch. They should be here in three hours. They probably just went through Harlem. They should be here in 30 minutes.” Finally, we are standing at the window waiting with great excitement and expectation because we know they are going to pull up to the curb at any moment.
When situations come up, stay focused on God. I begin by saying, “God, I surrender this situation to you. I don’t know how you are going to solve it but I know you are and I am thanking you in advance for resolution.” Then I declare verse 6: “God, you only are my rock and my salvation; You are my defense; I shall not be moved.” When my thoughts go toward the situation, I thank God again that He is the solution and I’m looking forward with expectancy to resolution. Remember, God has the situation worked out and is inviting you to partner with Him to see it through. He only is your rock-solid ground; He Only is your salvation-for eternity and in the situations of life; He only is your defense, so don’t focus on anything else. He’s got your back! Peter wrote in 1 Peter 5:7 “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” Your loving heavenly Father always has you covered.
