Editor,
Hello Havre!
Red Ribbon Week 2016 was a huge success thanks to you! We should be genuinely proud of our community for its efforts to promote a Drug-Free neighborhood.
McGruff was quite impressed and had a blast visiting you all at school. The schools participated in creative themes all week with much enthusiasm; making our students excited for a bright, healthy future. Our college promoted sober life styles at their athletic events, public facilities sponsored special adventures, an entertaining and educational radio contest was held by our KOJM/KPQX Radio, and our children’s buses paraded Red Ribbons. A fantastic amount of donations from local businesses flooded in to our HELP Committee, exhibiting impressive support. Our Red Ribbons were seen all over our town, visibly showing just how much we love and care for Havre and our world.
A very special thanks goes to our men and women in blue. They defend us and take preventive measures to ensure our community is safe and drug-free. They put their safety on the line to give us sanctuary, and make sacrifices every day to make the world a better place. Red Ribbon Week began as a way to remember an individual man’s sacrifices for our country, but has grown into something bigger than anyone could have imagined. We still remember and honor Enrique (Kiki) Camarena. He was a Drug Enforcement Administration agent who was tortured and killed in Mexico in 1985. When he decided to join the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, his mother tried to talk him out of it. “I’m only one person,” he told her, “but I want to make a difference,” he said.
Kiki’s belief that one person can make the world better influenced his loved ones so much that they started Red Ribbon Week. Today, millions pay tribute to all law enforcement by showing that they are close to our hearts, like the Red Ribbons we wear.
Thank you Havre!
Jessie Henderson and the HELP Committee
