Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup: Beeters reign over the 6C East goes on

The Chinook Sugarbeeters have already put together a District 6C East volleyball dynasty. What they did this past week merely added to it.

On Friday, on their home floor, the Beeters captured their fourth straight 6C East championship by beating the North Star Knights in the 6C East championship match. The win not only gave Chinook yet another district championship, but, it capped a second straight season in which the Beeters didn’t lose a single match to a district opponent.

Chinook started its run through the tournament Thursday afternoon when the Beeters handled upstart Box Elder by scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-11. In the win, Kourtney Hanson had seven kills and six blocks for Chinook, while Tia Russell had 16 assists and two blocks.

Then, in Friday morning’s semifinal, the Beeters faced another upset-minded squad in rival Chester-Joplin-Inverness. Yet, the story was the same as Chinook won by scores of 25-19, 25-7 and 25-17, with Kourtney Hanson, Taylor Neibauer and Kelsey Mathon all tallying six kills each. Kimberli Ghekiere and Kylee Vinson each had three kills for the Hawks.

The win over CJI pushed Chinook into the championship match Friday, and while the Beeters faced another big rival, the North Star Knights, they weren’t going to be denied another title. The Knights put up a good fight, but Chinook still won in a sweep, by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 26-24. In the title match, Kelsey Mathon had nine kills, nine assists, two aces and 25 digs, while Carrie Hofer added two aces. North Star got six kills from Paij Peterson and nine assists from Katelyn Hanson.

North Star showed heart throughout the tournament as the Knights had to rebound from a quarterfinal loss to CJI Thursday. In that match, the Hawks won in five sets, by scores of 26-24, 9-25, 19-25, 25-21 and 15-8. Kimberli Ghekiere had 12 kills and Gabby Mangold had 15 digs for the Hawks, while Lily Pedersen had 11 kills and Peyton King had five blocks for the Knights.

After the loss, North Star stayed alive by eliminating Big Sandy Saturday night. The Knights won that match by scores of 25-12, 27-25 and 25-16, with Sheridan Spicher totaling 11 kills and 11 digs. Big Sandy was led by Jenna Leader with four aces, six digs and two blocks.

Still alive, but the Knights were still two wins away from getting back to the title match. First, they beat Box Elder in four tough sets Friday morning, by scores of 21-25, 25-11, 25-18 and 25-21, with Lily Pedersen earning 11 kills and Katelyn Hansen totaling 24 assists. In Box Elder’s last match of the season, Lillian Gopher had eight kills and four aces.

The win set North Star up with a rematch against CJI in the third-place match, and this time, the Knights rolled. They beat their rivals by scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 27-25. Sheridan Pena had a big defensive match for the Knights, with 28 digs, while Lily Pedersen had seven kills. The Hawks got eight kills from Khloe Kamerzell, while Peyton Hawks had 15 assists and two aces.

The tournament got underway Thursday morning with Box Elder beating Big Sandy by scores of 25-21, 25-21, 19-25 and 25-14. The Bears, who had a good season overall, got three kills each from Lillian Gopher and Maddie Wolf Chief, while Jaylyn Cline had eight kills and three aces.

In the other first-round match, CJI blasted Hays-Lodge Pole by scores of 25-9, 25-5 and 25-12, with Khloe Kammerzell tallying 13 kills. HLP would go on to be eliminated by Box Elder, by scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 25-7 in the second loser-out match on Thursday.

Now, with the 6C East tourney in the books, Chinook and North Star will move on to this week’s Northern C Divisional, which runs Thursday through Saturday in Conrad.

This past weekend also saw Rocky Boy eliminated from the District 1B tourney in two matches, while Harlem suffered the same fate at the District 2B tournament.
