Parents looking for a more autism-friendly way for their children to celebrate Halloween and get treats are invited to take part in a trunk or treat Monday afternoon.
The event is organized by Early Head Start’s Home Visiting Program and Quality Life Concepts, a social service agency in Havre.
Jessie Fuzesy of Quality Life Concepts said people in vehicles that are decorated for Halloween will get together in the north parking lot of the District 4 HRDC building on the south end of Fifth Avenue. Children and their families will then go car to car for treats.
It will be the first time Quality Life Concepts and Early Head Start will be holding the event. Fuzesy said she and those in her We Are Autism positive parenting group began to talk about the trunk or treat idea last year. She added that families who have children with autism spectrum disorders are sometimes limited in what they can do on Halloween.
“And (having) a child out in a costume in the dark to go around (with) bright lights and loud noises is really difficult for the average family let alone a child with autism,” Fuzessy said.
So far, nine cars are expected to take part.
The trunk or treating will take place 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 31.
Children are welcome to show up in their costumes. Fuzesy said those who are not comfortable wearing a costume can also come and take part.
