Chili cookoff brings in funding for Bennett Memorial

People turned out Thursday night to dine on chilli and raise money for a memorial honoring the late Bonnie Bennett, remembered for her perennial volunteer work within the community.

Pastor John Chapman of the First Baptist Church said that this year's chili cook off  brought in 80 people and raised $688. He said four other people said they will make donations Monday.

"It went very well," Chapman said of this year's fundraiser.

The chili cookoff, sponsored by the First Baptist Church, is an annual all-you-can eat chili dinner that raises money through at-will donations or the needs of individuals and projects within the community.

This year all proceeds will go towards the Bonnie Bennett Memorial, an Eagle Scout project by Nicholas Montagino, a Havre Boy Scout and member of the church, to build a fire pit at the S-Curve park by Montana State University-Northern where 10th Street connects with 11th Street.

The memorial is meant to honor Bonnie Bennett, who was also a member of the church was well-known for her volunteer work within the community.

Bennett who frequently lent her time and energy to volunteer work for organizations in Havre, died in 2014 at age of 62.
