Leter to the Editor: Bachmeier bright spot in sad campaign season

Editor,

The election season is a sad affair.

We would be tempted to give up on it altogether if it were not for one bright spot — and that is Democrat Jacob Bachmeier who is running for House District 28. Mr. Bachmeier is an energetic, optimistic young man who is destined to make his mark on Montana politics.

Jacob has lived here in Havre all of his life. He campaigns with the positive energy of one who embraces public service and hard work. Mr. Bachmeier is committed to protecting Montana’s outdoor spaces, to creating new jobs and to defending public education, including Montana State University-Northern. He will be a fresh voice down in Helena and an antidote to the cynical and self-serving legislators who populate our state House.

Such a young candidate must endure the claim that he is too inexperienced and young to serve in the state House. The charge, of course, comes from those who have served for years and accomplished little. Let us remind your readers that Thomas Jefferson was 36 when he wrote the Declaration of Independence, and Lafayette was 19 when he came to America to defend the American Revolution.

Competence is not determined by age but by character, and Jacob Bachmeier has the character we need in our state government.
