Schafer named agent of the year

Kelly R. Schafer of Schafer Insurance in Havre recently attended the Western Region PIA Annual Insurance convention. During the Final Night Banquet he was completely taken by surprise and very honored to be awarded "Agent of the Year."

In the introduction the master of ceremony announcing the "Agent of the Year" said, "How does this guy do it? He works full time for the city of Havre as well as running the agency, among other commitments."

Schafer has worked with his father, Richard N. Schafer, for about 20 years as partner in the insurance agency.

When Dick Schafer died in December 2013, his son didn't give it a second thought that he would continue to run the business his

father had been owner and operator of for 52 years. He is now owner and operator but still works full time for the Havre Water Plant. His scheduled hours and days off allow him to work at the insurance office partial days and a couple full days each week.

When Dick Schafer owned and operated the business he had many employees over the 52 years, however, he was very proud that it was a family business with all of his children, Cheryl, Julie and Kelly as well as two grandsons, Nathan and Ryan Schafer, and two grandaughters, Sierra and Lisa Marie Morse working there at one time or another. With Kelly Schafer at the helm it is still a family operation with his son Ryan working full time with him.
