Local amateur radio operators helped commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Beaver Creek Park with a special events station on Oct. 7 and 8.
Lloyd Stallkamp, president of the Hi-Line Amateur Radio Club, said about 60 contacts were made to amateurs, known as hams, across North America.
Hams who responded were given a brief history of the park including its relationship to Fort Assiniboine and its status as one of the largest county parks. Hams responded from across the country and Canada, and included California, Arizona, New Hampshire, the San Juan Islands and northern British Columbia. A contact in Texas was made through a Japanese satellite.
A group of Boy Scouts commemorating the founding of their camp south of Boone, Iowa, chatted with the local operator.
Next week the Hi-Line Amateur Radio Club will participate with local Boy Scouts in a “Scouts on the Air” event.
