Powerful Eagles sweep HHS spikers in Lewistown

The Havre High volleyball team faced a difficult test last Friday, on the road against Lewistown and unfortunately for the Blue Ponies, they were not up for the task.

Although each set in the match turned out to be competitive, the Eagles needed only three to take down Havre, winning by the scores of 25-23, 25-16 and 25-21. With the loss, Havre is 3-8 on the season and 0-3 in Central A conference play.

"We are just making too many mistakes," HHS head coach Tamecia Jarvis said. "We are back to hitting in the negative, we weren't setting up a very good block. We aren't really working as a team right now. I am not sure if we are getting comfortable with losing, but I am not used to that. It's disappointing because we have a lot of potential, but we just aren't using it as a whole."

The first game was the closest between the two teams, as the Eagles managed to win it by just two points, 25-23. The second game was won more handily by Lewistown 25-16 and the Eagles finished off the sweep with a 25-21 win to take the match 3-0.

One of the biggest differences between the two teams came down to hitting. Lewistown finished the match with 31 kills. Havre ended up with just 13. Lewistown also outperformed Havre when it comes to assists, racking up a total of 30, compared to just nine for HHS.

Part of the reason the Ponies struggled to put the ball away, was the strong defensive effort by Lewistown, as the Eagles notched 62 digs in the victory, while Havre finished 52. Blocks also were in favor of Lewistown, three to two. Havre led Lewistown in aces 8-5, but the Eagles were in front in every other statistical category.

"I think we have girls that are too comfortable in their positions right now," Jarvis said. "So we are going to make everyone work for their position and compete for it and that's for every spot. We also need to get everyone playing as a team because that is something that we still aren't doing."

Camryn Huston put together a strong effort in the loss for the Ponies, with five kills and one block. Naomi Terry contributed with 13 digs and nine assists and Logan Huebsch scored an impressive six aces.

"We just aren't getting it done right now and we aren't going to win if we aren't finishing our swings and we aren't getting kills," Jarvis said. "We may have to bring up some others from JV and see what they can do or at least get these girls to start fighting for their positions."

Haydn Potter of Lewistown finished with a match-high 10 kills. Mikayla Comes also had an impressive day with 29 assists and five aces.

Havre will have another busy week ahead of it, as the Ponies will travel to Browning Thursday and host Conrad Saturday.
