Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Aden Passon, Havre High Golf

Havre High's Passon ready for a big finish on the golf course

With fall weather creeping up on us, it means that it's time for the Havre High golf teams to take part in the postseason, as the Blue Ponies’ year on the links winds down.

Saturday, Havre will compete in the Central A Divisional tournament in East Glacier and the Pony boys will be trying to defend their title from a season ago, when they placed all their golfers in the top 15 and won the team title going away.

One member of that team from a season ago, who will once again be on the course for the Ponies in East Glacier, is senior Aden Passon, who finished 14th at the divisional tournament last season with a round of 93.

Passon is part of an experienced Havre team that features fellow returners Dustin Haas and Kane Gabrielsen. Those three, along with Kyle Kirkpatrick and Gavin Mosbrucker, will look to keep the trophy out of the hands of Havre rivals Lewistown, Belgrade, Browning and Livingston.

While Passon has been playing the game of golf since he was around 8 years old, his game has continued to progress with each season he has spent on the Havre High golf team. He spent his first two years playing junior varsity and last season, made the varsity team fulltime, and more than held his own at the varsity level.

This year, he has continued to improve and has been among the top three golfers for Havre all season long. Last week, in the Ponies' final meets before divisionals, Passon put together two solid outings, posting a 90 at the Billings Central Invitational and following that up with an 85 in Laurel, which ended up being the low score for the team.

Passon, who grew up in Havre and learned to play at Prairie Farms Golf Course, will not only be looking to help the Ponies win another championship, he is looking to make sure his high-school golf career extends at least to one more weekend.

Passon and the Havre golf teams will begin their divisional tournament Saturday, but before the Ponies' departure, the Havre Daily News caught up with Passon for five questions.

HDN: What got you into the game of golf?

Passon: "It was my dad. He got me started. He always just liked to play for fun, and I kind of got more serious with it as I got older."

HDN: What do you like about playing golf?

Passon: "I like that I don't have to exercise. I like not having to run or do anything like that. I don't like that stuff."

HDN: Do you like watching golf and who is your favorite golfer?

Passon: "I like watching golf and my favorite golfer is Rory McIlroy. He's pretty good and he's funny and I just like his style of golf."

HDN: What's the toughest golf course you have played while on the golf team?

Passon: Sidney. The fairways were narrow, there were a lot of trees and the sand traps were kind of tricky."

HDN: What's your goal for divisionals and how does it differ from a regular tournament?

Passon: "I want to try and not get more than two putts on each green. I also want to try and hit the greens and if I don't, put myself in a position where I can be able to chip. It's always in your head that you have to do good at (Divisionals) and you know you are playing with good players and you can just feel people watching you."
