News you can use
Dear Editor,
I would like to share the good news and the good deeds that transpired this summer by Van Orsdel United Methodist Church’s SOS Committee (Save Our Souls).
VOUMC SOS Committee kicked off a third summer with their Back Pack Program. The program helps to feed Havre’s hungry youth, from preschool age through 12th grade during the summer months. Bags of food the size of a back pack are discreetly distributed to local youth at the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line or Lincoln-McKinley Primary School on Fridays before kids head home for the weekend. The backpacks are child-friendly and non-perishable, they’re easy to prepare and are composed of two containers of cereal with a small box of milk, a snack bar, a package of cookies, a juice box and two meal entrees.
Youth could apply each week of the summer for a backpack, which can make a big difference in the life of a hungry child. The SOS committee is providing a service to the Havre community through organizing the quantity of back packs needed, the delivery of the back packs to the Boys & Girls Club and Lincoln McKinley School, and acquiring the necessary funds to support this program. The costs are $5 a backpack and VOUMC SOS works diligently to come up with the funds each year to support this worthy cause. This year SOS ordered 600 back packs for Havre’s 2016 Back Pack Program. This program is sponsored by The Montana Food Bank Network, which currently helps to assist over 19 communities throughout Montana with their backpacks program. How fortunate Havre is to have such devoted stewards in our community, giving to those in need. Thank you VOUMC SOS, Boys & Girls Club and Lincoln-McKinley for all their efforts.
If anyone has questions or interest in this program they can contact the church office at 265-4232.
Thank you
Sherri Simonson
