News you can use
You know, Lord, there isn’t a one of us who doesn’t need help, now and then. We might not know we need help — but occasionally, we could all use a bit of encouragement. Older women are good at this.
Mom and Auntie Selena were both old-fashioned girls, both knew how to do a multitude of things. Mom, on the ranch, was miles away while hubby’s Auntie was just across town. Mom had the talent and ability to do many things. Auntie Selena also had special gifts; she once taught school, she loved to read, she also wrote poetry. And like Mom, Auntie Selena also loved to do ‘fancy’ work. Lord, remember her lovely crocheted macramé Afghan in autumn colors and the Fiesta one in browns and greens? What fun we two had crocheting a mile-a-minute Afghan.
She and Mom both made many lovely things and gave them to others.
And then there was cooking and baking. Both Mom and Auntie were marvelous cooks from way back. One made delicious rhubarb pie and the other, the yummiest sour cream raisin pie. Whenever either dessert was served at our house, though both Mom and Auntie Selena have been gone some years, their names are always brought up. Among other things, they had green thumbs, so that whatever either of them planted it seemed that it grew, be it flowers or vegetables.
Titus 2: 3-5 fit the ladies in that generation. Mom and Auntie Selena modeled goodness, by example and teaching. Their words were solid and sane. They exhibited good works in patience, instruction, discretion and maternal love. Especially fitting for them: verse 5:
“To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”
Thank You, Lord, for dear ones in our lives who were and are teachers, as well as encouragers.
Love, Mara
