Pony golfers back on the links

The 2016 golf season started fast and furious for the Havre Blue Ponies. But, it’s seemed like the Ponies haven’t been on the course forever lately.

That will change this weekend however, as the Blue Ponies play in back-to-back tournaments, starting with Friday morning’s Lewistown Invitational. On Saturday, Havre will be back home for a meet which will be played at Beaver Creek Golf Course.

This weekend marks the start of a busy stretch for the Blue Ponies, who will also get to see plenty of their Central A Conference rivals.

Friday’s Lewistown Invite, held at Pine Meadows Golf Club, will feature the Ponies, host Eagles, Browning Indians, as well as Belgrade and Livingston, among other teams in the area. The tournament will also have junior varsity competition as well.

Saturday’s tournament at BCGC will also feature Browning and Lewistown in the field, as well as many HHS competitors. It will also mark the final time the Ponies will play at home. Following Saturday’s tourney, Havre has a two-day trip to the Billings Central and Laurel Invitationals, and that’s all that’s left on the HHS schedule before the Ponies embark on the postseason, which starts with the Central A Divisional tourney Sept. 24 at East Glacier.

So, the upcoming busy stretch will be good for the HHS golfers, as they have had the last nearly two weeks off, having last played at the Browning Invitational back on Aug. 25.

Still, with the likes of seniors Dustin Haas, Kane Gabrielsen and Aden Passon leading a strong boys team, and, with the HHS girls team playing consistently strong, the Ponies are poised to have a good month of September, and carry that over into the Class A state tournament, which will be played Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Hamilton.

Both Friday’s Lewistown Invitational, and Saturday’s Havre Invite at BCGC are slated to begin with shotgun starts at 9:30 a.m.
