Dems to talk in park about public lands

The Hill County Democratic Party will be hosting “Public Lands in Public Hands” Tuesday, a burger feed and speakers who will emphasize the importance and value of public lands in Montana.

It will take place Tuesday night at the Eagle’s campground in Beaver Creek Park.

“We as Democrats strongly believe that public lands should remain in public in public hands,” said Jacob Bachmeier, vice-chair of the Hill County Democratic Party and a candidate for state representative.

He said local Democrats had been planning the event for a little over a year, and hope to make it an annual event.

Bachmeier said the issue of maintaining access to public lands has emerged as a major issue in Montana state legislative races, as well as both those for governor and Montana’s lone seat in the U.S House of Representatives.

In the past, some Republicans have either called for the transfer of some public lands from federal to state control or for an increased role in management. Democrats and some Republicans have opposed any such move saying that the state lacks the money to manage those lands without federal help and that it could lead to the sale of public lands to private interest.

Bachmeier said the large number of state and national parks is a significant draw for tourism.

Clayton Elliott, president of the Montana League of Conservation Voters and state Rep.Tom Jacobson, D-Great Falls, will be the featured speakers.

Bachmeier said there may also be games that people can take part in and they are free to bring their fishing poles to go fishing in the creek.

The event will start at 6 p.m. The burgers and drinks will be served free of charge, but those in attendance are encouraged to bring a side dish.

Speakers and other activities will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is free and open to the public.
