Havre Junior Rodeo brings out the best in young cowboys, cowgirls

The Great Northern Ram Rodeo is one of the most exciting events of the Great Northern Fair. Yet, before the professionals take to the fairgrounds today, the youngsters had their chance to make a name for themselves Wednesday night at the Havre Junior Rodeo.

The junior rodeo, which always helps kickoff the Great Northern Fair, had another spectacular night as more than 100 cowboys and cowgirls took part in the annual competition.

When it was all said and done, the participants, who ranged in age from four to 18, put on quite a show, especially a few individuals that saw the winner’s circle more than once. The person that ended up winning more events than any other was Anna Getten, who took home four different titles.

Getten, who competed in the 9-13 age group won goat tying (14.06), breakaway roping (10.7), pole bending (22.86) and barrell racing (15.87). However, Getten wasn’t the only girl to have a big night as Kashlyn Speaks Thunder won two events, the barrel racing and flag race in the 4-8 category, while also finishing third in the goat untying.

Speaks Thunder was also tied for the girls all-around championship with Hadley Not Afraid, who won pole bending in the 9-13 age group, but also finished second in both goat untying and barrel racing. She also came in fourth in flag racing.

Speaks Thunder and Not Afraid ended up sharing the all-around prize in the girls competition. Tearia Sunchild, who is also in the 4-8 age group, finished second in the all-around competition as well after placing in multiple events. The winner of the boys over competition was Jeremiah Brockie.

Others that finished first in multiple events at the junior rodeo were Enyis Colliflower, who won barrel racing in the 14-18 age group with a time of 18.22. She also joined with Cole Hould to win team roping as the only team with a qualifying score. Hould was also a multi-event winner as she also won the chute-dogging with a time of 12.66.

The other individuals who won events at the junior rodeo include Jocee Lewis in breakaway roping for 14-18, Brad Cichosz in bull riding 13-16, Sierra Jones in the 14-18 pole bending, Cruz Crowley in sheep riding, Stephanie Rollins in 14-18 goat tying and Blake Ozark in 4-8 goat untrying. Kellen Colliflower also won in the steer riding competition. Hould, who won twice, finished second in bull riding.

The Great Northern Ram Rodeo follows the junior rodeo and that starts tonight at 7.
