Three local talents got to experience one last night of high school football. Unfortunately, Havre High's Nate Rismon, Chester-Joplin-Inverness' Justin May and Chinook's Kevin Young had to endure a tough night on the scoreboard.
All three Hi-Line stars were a part of the 70th Annual Montana East-West Shrine Game Saturday night at Montana Tech's Alumni Coliseum. But, playing for the East team, the trio watched as the West dominated the game 45-14.
The West offense was led by the game's overall MVP, Whitefish quarterback Luke May, who also helped the Bulldogs to the Class A state championship last fall. May was brilliant both passing and running with his legs, but her certainly had help too as Dillon's Nate Simkins had a big night catching passes, while Glacier's Thomas Trefney, a Carroll College recruit, blasted through the East defense all night long.
On the other side of the ball, East quarterback Tanner Mayer of Fairfield, who was filling in for Havre Blue Pony Dane Warp, threw for over 120 yards, and wide receivers Jacob Hadley (Billings Central) and Tiger Frye (Billings Senior) had strong outings, but, the squad couldn't find the endzone nearly enough, as they scored just one offensive touchdown, a 37-yard rush by Billings Senior's Sam Sparks.
As for the local trio, Justin May caught one pass for the East squad, and Young had a couple of assisted tackles. Rismon saw plenty of action as well. Rismon and May are heading to play in the Frontier Conference this fall, with Rismon going to UM-Western, while May is headed to Tech.
While Luke May was named the game's MVP, Simkins was named the West Offensive MVP, while Montana Grizzly recruit Trace Letexier was named the West Defensive MVP. Hadley, who is headed to play for the Montana State Bobcats, was named the East Offensive MVP, while Joel Beck was named the East Defensive MVP.
