The North Stars opened their six-game road trip with a doubleheader at Medicine Hat Thursday. Havre split the two-game set, dropping the first game to Medicine Hat 5-3, before rallying to the win the second 5-4. The North Stars were supposed to play a doubleheader in Vauxhall Friday, in a makeup for an earlier two-game set that was rained out. However, the two teams once again had issues with weather and the doubleheader was canceled.
The North Stars finished their weekend on the road in Lewistown Sunday. Havre dropped the first game to the Redbirds, one of the top teams in the Northern A District, by the score of 7-0. The second game of what was already a makeup doubleheader, was later called off due to inclement weather.
With one win and two losses, the North Stars are now 14-28 on the season and 6-19 in district play.
In the opening game against Medicine Hat Thursday, the North Stars fell behind after giving up two runs in the bottom of the second inning. In the top of the third, Jerod Boles reached base on a fielder's choice and eventually scored to make it 2-1, but in the bottom of the fifth, the Knights scored three more runs to extend the lead to 5-1.
The North Stars got two runs in the top of the sixth when Kennedy McKay ripped an RBI single and Gavin Mosbrucker brought home a run with a sacrifice, but it was too little too late and the North Stars fell by two. Boles got the start and pitched all six innings in the loss for Havre. He struck out five and walked five. Jeff Miller led the North Stars with two hits, while Brenden Danielson, Dylan Carpenter, Jake Sedahl and Brendan Garden each had one.
Hoping to leave Medicine Hat with a split, the North Stars spotted the Knights a 2-0 advantage in the second game, allowing Medicine Hat to score a run in both the bottom of the second and fourth innings. Havre got on the board in the on sacrifice fly by Murphy, but then fell behind 4-1 after the Knights added two in the bottom half of the inning.
In the top of the seventh, down 4-2, Carpenter came up with a two-run single that tied the game at 4-4, then the North Stars went ahead went Danielson was able to steal home as Boles stole second. In the bottom of the seventh, Carpenter was able to the shut the door on the Knights and earned the complete-game victory.
Carpenter, who threw 97 pitches, allowed just four runs, two of them earned and walked just one batter. Sedahl led Havre with two hits. Danielson, Carpenter, Miller, Boles and McKay each had one in the victory.
The North Stars are set to take the field again this Thursday in the opening round of the Northern A District tournament, which will take place in Great Falls.
