Harlem officials advise residents to conserve water

City of Harlem officials are advising citizens to conserve water due to a problem with the city’s water treatment plant being able to keep up with normal watrer use.

Harlem City Clerk and Treasurer Rebecca Skoyen said there are no issues with the quality of city’s water.

“The water is safe to drink,” she said.

The problem, she said, is that the water treatment plant is having trouble treating water as fast as it normally does. Skoyen said workers are cleaning some filters to try and make the plant more productive, although she did not know if more was being done.

She said the plant’s problems were discoverd over the weekend.

The city advised citizens to conserve water when it comes to things like washing cars or watering the grass, but that it’s also not to an extreme point where people shouldn’t flush their toilets, Skoyen said.

The problem is being addressed and the city hopes it is fixed by day’s end, but, Skoyen said, there is no guarantee it will be.
