Local Golf Report: Rotary Week coming soon to Havre

From Tee to Green...

The tourney season is in high gear right now, and, last weekend at Prairie Farms Golf Course, another of the big scrambles on the schedule took place.

Amidst windy conditions, the annual NALSF Scramble, which raises money for Montana State University-Northern athletic scholarships, was held at Prairie Farms. An Independence Bank team emerged as the winner with a total gross score of 75. That's a solid score considering the wind and tough pin placements, so congrats to Eric Wilting, Todd Smith, Shane Borlaug and Karen Faber for an outstanding round.

Of course, as the calender turns to July, the next big event at Prairie Farms is Rotary Week. The week kicks off with the annual Rotary Golf Camp, put on by Jim Kato and Doug Sheppard. The youth camp is open to golfers ages 8-18, and will run July 5-7. The camp has been highly successful in the past, and anyone wishing to enter should call the Pro Shop at Prairie Farms.

Next weekend also marks the annual Rotary Blast golf tournament with its unique, modified stableford scoring system. The event is an 18-hole, 2-person tourney, and again, to enter, players should call the Pro Shop.

Meanwhile, last week's league action started with Tuesday night men's league where Vic's Place was high team with 24 points. Kerry Ward, Bill Schilling, Paul Dees and Tom Haas comprised the team. Dan Wagner was low gross with a 38, while Jim Benner was low net with a 29.

Last Wednesday saw my boys from Havre Ford share high-team honors with Master Sports. Both teams scored 23 points, and it was Havre Ford's second week in a row earning high team. They may never want me in the lineup again at this rate. Jeremy Jensen and Jim Kato each fired even-par rounds of 36 to earn low gross, while Jim Wirt was low net with a 33.

In ladies league last Thursday, Makin Waves was high team with 24 points. The squad was made up of Ali Ward, Tammy Boles, Dawn Ward and Debbie Ritz. Sarah Spangler shot a 37 for low gross, and Kim Klein and Sue Armstrong shared low net with a 32.

Finally, I'd like to take this opportunity to offer my deepest condolences to the entire Donoven family. The loss of Jerry was a sad and tragic event, and, having known Jerry for many years, including playing some golf with him over the summers, he was a great guy, and will be truly missed. My heart and prayers go out to his entire family and his loved ones.
