Havre Middle School received a grant in late May that provided money for a books and journal package for sixth- through eighth-graders.
The purpose of the grant was to encourage students to read and journal during the summer and prevent summer "brain drain."
A press release by Janet Ingram of Havre Middle School Communication Arts Department says a study by a reading company based in Georgia showed that reading during the summer will "improve performance during the school year" by helping stem said brain drain that occurs every year during the summer.
Cheryl Morse, executive director of the Havre Public Schools Education Foundation, said the foundation provided the money for the books.
Morse said almost all but about 25 students of approximately 400 took the books and journal package.
Ingram's press release says students chose from two fiction and one nonfiction titles. The journal is so students can chronicle the plot lines and character development while reading the books.
Morse said students will be allowed to keep the books. She said the kids were "pretty excited" to receive the books.
