North Stars hit the lumber in Whitefish

The Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team was once again on the road this past weekend as they took part in the Ed Gallo Wood Bat tournament in Whitefish.

The North Stars, who played a total of four games in the tournament, finished with a 1-3 record overall.

Havre knocked off Belgrade Thursday, the opening day of the tournament, 8-0. After that, Havre dropped its remaining games, losing to Glacier B 4-3 Thursday night, before falling to Glacier A 9-3 and West Valley of Spokane Saturday. The North Stars are now 10-16 overall on the season.

In the team's only win of the weekend, the North Stars knocked off Belgrade’s B team Thursday, thanks to the complete-game shutout tossed by Havre pitcher Jerod Boles. Boles surrendered just five hits and struck out nine, while walking three in the victory.

Brenden Danielson, Brenden Garden and Jeff Miller all had two hits apiece in the win for Havre. Kennedy McKay also had a hit and two RBIs. Ethan Roberts notched a hit in the win, while Dylan Carpenter and Trey Murphy each contributed with an RBI.

In their second game of the tournament later Thursday, the North Stars took on the Glacier B team and fell 4-3 thanks to a run in the bottom of the seventh by Glacier.

McKay pitched the whole way for the North Stars and despite having a solid start, he got the loss after throwing for more than six innings. He allowed four runs on six hits and walked just one. He was one out away from pitching a complete-game and sending it to extra innings, but instead, he was hit with the loss.

Miller had another solid outing at the plate as he registered two hits. Jake Sedahl, Carpenter, Boles and Roberts all added one. Sedahl and Mosbrucker also tallied the North Stars’ only RBIs.

The North Stars continued their tournament Friday, when they were defeated soundly by Glacier’s A team 9-3. Glacier built an 8-3 lead thanks to a five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth, then used defensive and pitching to salt away the six-run victory.

Carpenter got the loss for the North Stars as he gave up nine runs on eight hits in six innings pitched. Havre also managed just four hits in the game, with one each coming from Sedahl, Miller, McKay and Boles.

The North Stars also did battle with West Valley Saturday, a team out of Spokane, Washington. Havre dropped the game by a score of 16-0.

Havre is back at home Tuesday night for a Northern District doubleheader with the Great Falls Chargers.
