The Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team traveled to Williston, North Dakota, this past weekend and when it was all said and done, Havre took part in five games, winning two.
The North Stars started the tournament by taking on Wahpeton, N.D. Thursday and fell 12-0. They followed that up with a 5-3 win over the Lumsden Cubs Friday, then lost 3-1 to the Miles City Outlaws Saturday morning. However, Havre still had one win left in it, defeating Sturgis, South Dakota, 5-4 Saturday, before ending the tournament with an 11-5 loss to Lumsden Sunday.
For the weekend, the North Stars had a record of 2-3 and that means that for the season, Havre is now 9-11.
Thursday, in Havre’s first game in Williston, the North Stars took on Wahpeton and despite throwing their best pitcher Dylan Carpenter, they dropped the game 12-0. Wahpeton scored three runs in the first inning, then one each in the third and the fourth. However, the fifth inning was the most damaging to the North Stars as Wahpeton scored seven runs to end the game.
Carpenter got the loss after allowing four earned runs and 10 hits. Jerod Boles and Jeff Miller each managed a hit, which were the only ones in the game for Havre.
In the second game, the North Stars rebounded thanks to some clutch hitting. After Trey Murphy notched a single that scored Carpenter early in the game, the North Stars found themselves trailing 3-1 going into the seventh inning. Yet, they scored four runs in the seventh, two of which came via a two-run double by Sedahl, which gave the North Stars the 5-3 lead.
Havre blanked Lumsden in the bottom half of the seventh inning, thanks in large part to pitcher Jerod Boles, who earned the complete-game victory after allowing just three runs on six hits in seven innings pitched. He also struck out seven.
At the plate, Miller notched two hits, while Sedahl had a hit and two RBIs. Brenden Garden, Murphy, Kennedy McKay and Gavin Mosbrucker all added hits in the win.
In the third game against Miles City, Miller took to the mound and threw an impressive game, surrendering just three hits in five innings. But he allowed three runs, which was two more than his offense was able to produce in a 3-1 loss.
Miller did manage a hit offensively, as did Murphy, McKay and Garden. Carpenter also had a single and an RBI in the loss. Carpenter threw two scoreless innings in relief.
Against Sturgis Saturday, the North Stars' offense got clicking early as they scored four runs in the top of the first, then another in the second to build a 5-2 lead. From there, Brenden Danielson made the lead stick and eventually earned the win after giving up four runs in five innings. Carpenter came on to close it out, by pitching the last two innings in the 5-3 victory.
The Havre offense exploded for 10 hits, with two each from from Boles, Sedahl and McKay. Carpenter added a hit, as did Danielson. Mosbrucker and Garden also had hits, while McKay and Sedahl both had two RBIs.
On Sunday, the North Stars took on Lumsden in a rematch of Friday’s game, but this time around, it was Lumsden which got the best of Havre 11-5. McKay was on the mound for Havre and was hit with the loss after allowing eight runs and 10 hits in five innings.
Offensively, Murphy was the best hitter of the day for Havre, belting a pair of hits and notching two RBIs. Sedahl also added a hit and an RBI for Havre. Danielson and Kaiden Anez also got hits in the loss for the North Stars.
The North Stars return to Northern District play Tuesday when they visit Tri-County for a doubleheader. Havre then travels to a wood bat tournament this weekend in Whitefish.
