Obituary: Ruby Stump

Ruby M. Stump "White Bear Woman" and "Speckled Bird Woman", 76, passed away of natural causes on Monday, June 20, 2016, at Northern Montana Hospital. Wake service began at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2016, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Rocky Boy, and will continue until her funeral service, which will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2016. Burial will follow next to her beloved husband Videl in the Stump Family Cemetery. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. Ruby was born on July 21, 1939, in Rocky Boy to Charles and Edith (Fine Bow) Writing Bird. She was raised in Rocky Boy attending schools there, where everyone knew her as Chalope, a nickname her father had given her. Following her school years, Ruby married Videl Stump, Sr., and the couple had 10 children. Ruby worked hard at home, raising her children with Videl, and worked as a Cree teacher in the Rocky Boy Schools for many years. After that, she worked for Havre Laundry for a time, before going back to her beloved schools, and serving as a cultural consultant for the Rocky Boy schools.  

Ruby was a wonderful mother, who believed family time was precious. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved spending time with them. She enjoyed beading and sewing, and was an active member of the Native American Church.

Ruby was preceded in death by her beloved husband Videl Stump Sr .; her daughter, Cheryl Stump; her son, Tyson Stump; her granddaughter, Jessica Mae Stump; her sisters, Caroline Gray Boy, Wilberta Lee, Amy Harris, Margaret Weaving and Nadine Morsette; and her brother James Ironmaker.

She is survived by her sons, Calvin J. (Roanna) Stump, Videl Stump, Jr., Victor (Fray) Nomee, Rueben Stump, Anthony Standing Rock and Ron Laman, all of Rocky Boy; her daughters, Vidella Corcoran, Dawn Stump, Dixie (Arnold) Four Souls, Marva (Darin) Sunchild, Marlo Stump, Jackie Turtle and Jo Vonn Plenty, all of Rocky Boy; numerous beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her brother. Kenneth Writing Bird Sr. of Rocky Boy; her sisters, Pearl Whitford and Geraldine Rutherford, both of Rocky Boy; and numerous beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
