Havre North Stars Jamboree features legion baseball galore
After a slew of games against Northern A District opponents, the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team is ready to take on some new foes this weekend at the North Stars Jamboree.
The jamboree, which takes place annually at Legion Field, will begin today and run through Sunday with a total of nine teams slated to be in attendance. In addition to Havre, other teams scheduled to play in the tournament are the Kootenai Valley Rangers, Great Falls Outlaws, Fort MacLeod Royals, Medicine Hat Majestics, Glasgow Reds, Calgary Redbirds and Lethbridge Giants.
The North Stars will play a total of four games in the jamboree. Havre will play twice tonight, with the first game coming today at 4 p.m., against the Rangers, then again at 8 p.m., vs the Majestics. The North Stars will then play the Lethbridge Giants Saturday at 8 p.m., followed by a final game against Calgary at noon Sunday.
“It’s going to be good to see some other teams,” North Stars head coach Dick Fuzesy said. “It’s also going to be a nice thing for me, too, because we have been playing so many district games that I haven’t gotten a chance to mix things up a whole lot. Sometimes, you just get used to using the same lineup, and I want to give some of younger guys a chance to get out there and show what they can do.”
The North Stars, who enter the weekend with an overall record of 5-6 after a sweep of the Great Falls Chargers Wednesday night, may want to get some young guys involved, but the team's most reliable players are still its veterans.
At the plate, Jake Sedahl is once again leading the way for Havre with a .400 average to go along with five extra-base hits and 13 RBIs. After Sedahl, the most productive player has been Jerod Boles, who is hitting .387 and has scored 15 times so for this season. Dylan Carpenter is another key cog for the offense with a .367 average and five RBIs as is Jeff Miller, who is hitting .313 with seven RBIs. Brendan Garden has also done well at the plate, with an average of .345.
On the mound, Fuzesy has used a number of different hurlers, none more than Carpenter, who has a 2-1 record in four appearances. Other pitchers who have started multiple games for Havre this season are Brenden Danielson, Garden, Miller, Boles and Kennedy McKay.
Other players who will see the field this weekend will be Ethan Roberts, Cole Keller, JayR Caplette, Tony Antley, Trey Murphy and Gavin Mosbrucker.
“I think it’s a good thing for all of the teams coming,” Fuzesy said. “There is no pressure, like in some other tournaments, we can just go play. We can try some different kids in different spots and we can get in a lot of baseball.
“The teams that we have are excited to play,” he added. “They are excited about being able to play at night, and they also get a chance to see some other teams, so it’s good for everybody and the fans get to watch some great baseball.”
The North Stars Jamboree gets underway today with 18 total games scheduled. The final game will be played at 2 p.m. Sunday. All games are at Legion Field.
