Police keep eye on cemeteries for vandalism

With Memorial Day approaching, the Hill County Sheriff’s Office and Havre Police Departments want to remind people that all Hill County public cemeteries are closed after dark, and there will be extra law enforcement patrolling the areas.

Hill County Sheriff Don Brostrom said there have been vandalisms and thefts over the years at the cemeteries especially around Memorial Day. This time of the year is usually a more busy time, as people lay flowers and other memorials at the cemeteries.

“They’ll steal the flowers, steal the memorials. We’ve had times when headstones were damaged,” Brostrom said, before adding that the departments are being proactive.

Brostrom pointed out that the cemeteries are always closed after dark, that’s always been the case. Those who are caught in any Hill County cemetery after dark will be cited, he said.
