The Havre High track teams had one final home meet this season and it was this past Saturday in the quadrangular against Lewistown, Malta and North Star at the Havre Middle School track.
Both Blue Pony teams put together solid performances in the meet, but both teams were overshadowed by Lewistown, which won the boys meet with 114 points, compared to 70 for Havre, and the girls meet with 109 points, well ahead of Havre's 86. Both the Malta girls and boys teams finished third with 45 and 36 points, while each North Star team was fourth, as the girls scored 16 and the boys scored 13.
There were a number of Havre athletes who performed well, but nobody had a bigger day than sprinter Michael Loftus, who won both the 100-meter dash and the 200 with times of 11.53 and 23.3. Jacob LaBrie joined Loftus in capturing an individual title by winning the 400 (52.0). Luke Karnauskas won high jump at 5-10 and finished second in the 800 (2:03).
LaBrie notched a fourth-place showing in the 100 by posting a time of 12:07. Ivar Aageson notched a second place in the 400 (52.3); Lane Paulson finished fourth in the 800 (2:17.8). Austin Jones was fourth in the mile with a time of 5:01.5, as well as second in the 300 hurdles (45.8) and Brandon Shaw was fifth in the 400 after running a 60.5. Nik Keller was the other boys athlete to place for Havre, as he finished second in the high jump behind Karnauskas at 5-8.
“Our runners are really having a great season,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “They just are. Our boys sprinters, whether it be the 100, 200 or the 400. Just like a number of people have said, we have five boys, who are all running the low 53s and 52s and that bodes well for going into divisionals.”
Havre also scored points by winning both the 400 and 1,600 relays in the boys competition. The 400-relay team posted a time of 45.37 and the 1,600 team finished with 3:35.4.
Like the boys team, the Pony girls didn't win the meet, but they had a number of individuals place, led by Ireland Coyne, who won the 300 hurdles (51.0) and finished second in the 100 hurdles (17.2), finishing behind Logan Huebsch, who joined Coyne as the only HHS girls to win an event, by capturing the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.8.
Naomi Terry may not have won an event, but she still had another really strong day, as she finished second in both the 100 and the 200 to Jaree Mane of Lewistown, with times of 12.8 and 26.6, respectively. Terry was also part of a 400 relay team that finished second after posting a time of 52.37.
“Naomi continued her really strong season,” Ita said. “She ran against Mane from Lewistown and the two of them are probably two of the best runners in the state, at least in Class A, so it was fun to watch them compete.”
Senior Rachel David also scored plenty of points for Havre, finishing second in the 400 (63.7) and the 800 (2:36.9). She was also part of a 1,600 relay that captured first place after running a 4:23.56. Fellow senior Megan Erickson also placed in two distance events, running a 2:45.1 to get fifth in the 800 and a 6:10 to earn fifth in the 1,600.
Freshman Caitlyn Terry was another athlete who had an impressive outing, as she finished second in the long jump at 13-8.25 and the triple jump at 30-4. She also finished third in the pole vault at 8-0, just behind Loni Waid of Havre, who finished second. Waid finished fourth in the 200 with a time of 30.
Another freshman who stood out for Havre was Sarah Faber, who was second in the high jump at 4-10 and third in the long jump at 13-8. Taylor Marinkovich, yet another freshman, was third in the 200 (13.9) and the 400 (29.6), along with Kim Irvin, who was third in the triple jump with at 30-2.
“We still are not getting a ton of points from the field events, especially the throws,” Ita said. “But, we did get a lot out of Caitlyn Terry in the jumps. Sarah Faber also placed in the jumps as well. So that was good to see from them.”
Other Havre girls who placed include Kristen Nash, who was third in the shot put, following a throw of 95-5; Kaylee Nystrom. who came third in the 400 after running a 65.8 and Megan Whitford, who finished fourth in the 400 with a 66.7.
Both Havre track teams will be off this weekend and will return to action May 20-21 in Laurel at the Eastern A Divisional meet.
“Right now we are getting to a good place health wise,” Ita said. “I think we have pretty much everybody back now and the week off before divisionals will also help. We will get the kids into some really good workouts and we will go from there.”
