News you can use
Rain was the big story last week when it came to the local golf scene. And not just rain, but lots of it.
Certainly, the wet conditions weren’t conducive to golf last week, including the two days and nights of snow that fell on golf courses around our area. But, longterm, that moisture will hopefully go a long way toward helping keep our golf courses green and in beautiful shape as the spring transitions to summer.
And according to the national weather service, the conditions for the coming golf summer are going to be hot and dry.
While El Nino’ is weakening, and could be gone for good in another month, National Weather Service is calling for temperatures to be well above average and precipitation to be well below normal over the months of May, June and July. Those conditions are certainly ideal for warm, sunny golf days, especially weekends, and they should keep local golf courses booming this summer. However, they are not conducive to grass staying green, or to water supplies running high during the summer months.
So, even though the rain may have interrupted the early part of the golf season last week, and definitely interrupted an important week of my tennis season, there’s no denying all that moisture was a welcome sight to our area.
Of course, the rain washed out the last two nights of men’s league at Prairie Farms Golf Course, as both last Tuesday and Wednesday night were canceled. League play will resume this week run through Wednesday night, while the ladies are getting closer to starting their season on Thursday night’s as well.
And as the weather gets nicer, it’s never too early to start talking about the tournament schedule. First up at Prairie Farms is the Golf For a Cure tourney, a three-woman, 18-hole scramble which raises money and awareness for fighting all forms of cancer. The tournament is slated for June 4.
As a reminder, anyone wishing to have their tournament information published in From Tee to Green, please email me that info at [email protected].
