Walmart holds benefit for cancer-stricken employee

Walmart employees will hold a benefit Friday for fellow employee Sherri Horinek, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor about a month ago.

Amy Nichols, who works in the store’s personnel department, said anyone who would like to contribute can order a pizza “in honor of Sherri” from Pizza Hut Friday. The restaurant will give 20 percent of the proceeds to Horinek. Those ordering the pizza will get to eat the pizza.

Nichols said that Horinek has insurance, but there are still costs, among them the travel expenses and the time off work. Horinek has a husband and two sons, both of whom also work at Walmart.

Nichols said Horinek recently had surgery to remove the tumor, but doctors were unable to get everything. Nichols said Horinek is scheduled to start chemotherapy this week. Further action depends on how the next procedure goes.

For anyone who wants to go beyond buying pizza in support of Horinek, Nichols said she could be found at Walmart. People can also donate through Wells Fargo to the Sherri Horinek account.

Nichols said Horinek’s Walmart family misses her.

“She’s an awesome lady and we’re really sad to not have her at work. She makes things so much fun — she’s very comical,” Nichols said, chuckling.
