Local tracksters headed to Glasgow Top 10

Believe it or not, the Havre High track teams have hit the stretch run of their season and the start of that, is signaled by the annual Top Ten meet, which will be held in Glasgow today.

Both Blue Pony track teams will compete with 29 other teams from the ranks of Class A and Class B/C in the North/East Top Ten meet. The first events are scheduled to begin today at 3.

“It’s more regularly scheduled for one thing,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “There is a really tight schedule and just 10 kids that you are going to compete against. It’s an exciting atmosphere. It starts at 3 in the afternoon and goes until the evening. The crowd is really great too. A lot of times, there is a lot of mingling around during track meets, but not during this one. People, for the most part, sit in the stands and watch the athletes. It’s really something to watch.”

The Ponies certainly will be busy in Glasgow as a total of 17 athletes will participate for both the HHS boys and girls teams. The Pony boys will be led by Nate Rismon and Michael Loftus, who are each entered in a team-high four events. Rismon made it in the 200-meter dash and the pole vault, as well as a member of both the 400 and 1,600 relay team.

Loftus, on the other hand, will run in the 100 and the 200 along with both of the the relays. Luke Karnauskas, who just won the 800 at the Whitefish A.R.M meet last Saturday, will run in that event, as well as the high jump and the long relay. Jacob LaBrie will run in three events, the 400 and both relays, while Ethan Roberts is also in three events for Havre. Roberts the 100, 200 and 400 relay.

Distance runner Austin Jones will be in action in both the 1,600 and the 3,200; Thomas Keith will compete in the shot put and Ivar Aageson qualified for the pole vault.

“It’s definitely a different atmosphere,” Ita said. “Most of the time, we don’t get big crowds at track meets, but the stands are packed there. The athletes also get to focus on just a few events and they can focus on their certain events, instead of running back and forth, trying to get ready for multiple events.”

The Havre girls also have a number of athletes that will be in action led by Naomi Terry, who will be entered in four different events for the Ponies: the 100, 200 and both the 400 and 1,600 relays. Sophomore Logan Huebsch is also in four events as she will compete in the 100 and 300 hurdles, as well as both relays.

In addition to Huebsch in the hurdles, Ireland Coyne also qualified in the 100 hurdles. She will also run the in the short relay. Havre will also be well represented in the distance events as Rachel David will run in the 800 and the 1,600 relay. Megan Erickson will also run in the 1,600 for HHS.

The other Havre girls that qualified for the Top Ten meet are Kristen Nash in the discus, Caitlyn Terry in the triple jump and Loni Waid in the pole vault. Kaylee Nystrom will also participate in both the 400 and 1,600 relays.

“Glasgow does a really great job of making it special for all the kids in all 17 events,” Ita said. “The crowd is really great too. They really appreciate all of the athletes. The athletes are premiered down on the track and on the field and that makes it really exciting for the kids.”

The Top Ten meet starts today at 3 in Glasgow. Havre will then host Matla, North Star and Lewistown in a quadrangular at the Havre Middle School Track on Saturday.
