Pony thinclads sharp at A.R.M.

Havre High track teams perform well in Whitefish

After getting rained out in Malta last Tuesday, the Havre High track teams were back in action Saturday in Whitefish, where the Blue Ponies got to test themselves against some unfamiliar competition.

Both Havre teams performed well in the A.R.M. Invitational, as the Havre boys finished sixth with a total of 41 points and the Havre girls finished seventh with 38. Columbia Falls took home first place in the boys meet with a total of 99 points, followed by Glacier with 92 and Thompson Falls with 52. On the girls’ side of things, Glacier was the top dog with 127 points, while Whitefish was second with 52 and Plains was third with 50.

“Every kid that we had that was capable of scoring points, scored points,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “We put a lot of kids in the JV meet where they should be and the JV girls scored 80 some points. Both our varsity teams also scored a good amount of points. The coaches and I were trying to think of the last time Havre did that well in Whitefish and we thought it goes back to the days of Steve Heberly. I think every single kid we had PR’d.”

Like they have many times in recent weeks, the sprinters and runners on the Pony boys team carried the day. Senior Luke Karnauskas performed as well as any Havre athlete, winning the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:05.96 and also finished sixth in the high jump at 5-10. Yet, he wasn’t the only Havre runner to have success as sprinters Michael Loftus and Nate Rismon both had big days. Rismon posted second-place finishes in both the 200 and the 400, with times of 23.1 and 51.46, respectively. While Rismon impressed, so did Loftus. The junior notched a fourth-place showing in the 400 with a time of 52.74, as well as a fifth-place finish in the 100 with a time of 11.55. The Havre boys also got points out of the 1,600 relay team, which finished second after a time of 3:31.64.

“Our boys got to the end of the meet and they didn’t think they had anything left,” Ita said. “But we told them that they had a chance to run against the best 1,600 relay team in the state (Columbia Falls) and that they had a chance to see really where they’re at. I would have been ticked if they had run a 3:34 and finished third or fourth and they go out and run a 3:31 on dead legs. That was really fun to watch and that made a really exciting race with Columbia Falls that was neck-and-neck the whole way and was anyone’s race right up until the end.

“I don’t know how anyone watches the 1,600 without getting emotional,” he added. “I don’t know how you can’t cheer on all the athletes. It’s the end of the meet and all those kids are working so hard, you can see the looks of determination on their faces. It’s just really something that’s fun to watch. It’s addicting.”

The Pony girls, who were also very competitive in the meet, got a slew of stellar performances led by sprinter Naomi Terry, who tied for first in the 100 with a time of 13.46. The junior also performed well in the 200, finishing third with a time of 27.32. However, Terry was not the only Havre girl to place in multiple events. Sophomore Logan Huebsch matched the feat by placing in both the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Huebsch ended up fourth in the 100 hurdles after posting a time of 17.18. She then finished third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.75.

Senior Rachel David also earned points for the HHS girls, thanks a time of 1:04.29 in the 400, which got her a fifth-place finish. Havre was also third in the 400 relay with a time of 52.86 and fourth in the 1,600 relay with a time of 4.24.88.

“We had another great day from our runners,” Ita said. “Naomi had a really great day. Rachel ran well and placed in the 400 and Logan was also able to place in both hurdles, so again, everyone we had that was capable of placing, placed. It was a really great day for the kids and I think we came away thinking that the future is bright.”

The Havre track teams will be back in action Tuesday, when they will compete in the annual Top Ten meet in Glasgow. It is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
