Special Olympics athletes, their friends and supporters and local law enforcement will gather at 1st Street and 5th Avenue in downtown Havre at 8 a.m. Monday to kick off the annual torch run.
At 8:30 a.m., the torch will be lit and U.S. Border Patrol agents will join Havre police officers in carrying the torch to Fort Benton.
Eventually, the torch will be in Missoula, where the Montana Special Olympics will be held May 17 to 20.
"We are hoping that people will stand along the path and cheer them as they go through," said Mandy Hansen, Special Olympics spokeswoman.
In the early stages of the run, she said, Special Olympians will join in the run.
When the runners arrive in Fort Belknap, Havre police and Border Patrol agents will be replaced by law enforcement from the Great Falls area and the run will continue to Missoula.
Hansen said law enforcement has always been very helpful in supporting Special Olympics. They often donate time for the torch run and many take part in the annual Polar Plunge.
