Gun found near Box Elder school, schools closed

Box Elder Public Schools have been closed today because a gun was found in the area of the school.

Hill County Sheriff Don Brostrom said the gun was found "somewhere in the area of the school."

Chippewa Cree Police, which patrol Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation, are looking into the matter, he said.

Box Elder junior high school and high school principal Jeremy McDonald said the gun was not found in the school and all he knew was that it was found within tribal jurisdiction.

The school is located just outside the boundaries of the reservation.

He said a "couple kids" were still on their way home, but everyone else had been evacuated safely, and no one had been hurt. McDonald said that Rocky Boy police were looking into the matter.

No one from Rocky Boy Police was available to answer any questions about the incident.
