Scotties edge Blue Ponies at home

For the first time this season, the Havre High softball team got some good weather for a home game. Despite that, the end result was not what the Blue Ponies were hoping for, but even though they lost, HHS can still take away many positives from its performance.

The Ponies fell behind the Glasgow Scotties 7-0 three innings into Thursday’s game at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field. Yet, Havre rallied and ended up with the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning. Unfortunately, Havre needed to get two runs across to tie the game and the Ponies fell just short, losing to the Scotties 10-8.

“They never quit, they kept pushing through,” HHS head coach Whitney McNally said of her players following the loss. “We had a couple of bad innings, but they never gave up. I was wondering there for a minute what was going to happen when we got down early, but give the girls credit, they fought their way back in it.”

The Scotties opened the game with a run in each of the first two innings to go ahead 2-0. But in the top of the third, Glasgow blew the game wide open with a five-run inning that featured four hits. At that point, Havre trailed 7-0.

However, in the bottom of the fourth, the Ponies started to climb back into it. Actually, they hit their way back into it. First, Claire Worm belted a three-run home run that trimmed the Glasgow lead to 7-3.

Then, in the bottom of the fifth inning, following a Glasgow run, Dani Wagner hit a solo shot that kept Havre within striking distance at 8-4. By the time Scout Boucher crossed home plate later in the inning, the score was 8-5.

The score stayed 8-5 until the top of the seventh inning, when some Havre errors helped Glasgow add two pivotal insurance runs, making the score 10-5. Facing a five-run deficit, the Ponies went to work. Alex Barkus got things going with a triple. She later scored on an RBI single by Payton Howard, which made it 10-6.

Later in the inning, Camryn Huston got a single to drop into center field, scoring another run. HHS added another run on a passed ball and suddenly, a comeback seemed possible. But with a runner on and two outs, Glasgow finished the game off with a strikeout.

With the loss, Havre is now 1-1 on the season. The Ponies have played a number of exhibitions, but this is just their second regulation game of the season and their first seven-inning game of the year.

“That was very nice,” McNally said. “You learn a lot when you play a whole game and you find out who is going to play in certain situations.”

Jacey McDonald led the Ponies with two hits in the loss. Wagner, Barkus, Huston and Worm all had one hit a piece. Johnson got the win for Glasgow, while Barkus was given the loss.

“We have some work to do,” McNally said. “But Glasgow is a very good team. We just have a few small things that we need to fix and we will be fine.”

The Ponies will take to the road this weekend for their biggest game of the season so far as they travel to Belgrade Saturday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
