Evans breaks UM triple jump record

Former Blue Pony shining for Griz women's track team

Former Havre Blue Pony Sammy Evans had a brilliant track and field career with the Blue Ponies. And, she's been doing the same thing at the University of Montana for the past four years.

Now a senior, Evans is competing in her final outdoor track and field season at Montana, and, like she has done during indoor season, Evans is making Montana history.

Already the triple jump record holder at UM for indoor track, Evans added the outdoor record to her resume last weekend in the Oregon Relays at famed Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.

Evans, the UM indoor record holder as well, won the triple jump with her first career effort over 42 feet, going 42-0.75 to break her own PR of 41-11.5 she set last spring while competing unattached.

Her 42-footer had a wind reading of 2.1 meters per second, above the allowable limit of 2.0 for school records. No matter. She had another jump Saturday of 41-7.5 with a 1.6 wind reading that still broke Renee Dunn's record of 41-0.75 from 2003.

Evans and the Griz track teams are back in action at the Cat-Griz Duals this weekend in Bozeman. Evans is once again gunning for an outdoor Big Sky championship and a shot as not only a regional, but NCAA championship qualifier later this spring.
